Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Tuesday said a drug-free society was closely linked to the vision of a developed India, as healthy, educated and responsible citizens were required to achieve it.
Participating in the ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Sankalp Padayatra’ at Diphu in Karbi Anglong district, Governor Acharya said the freedom fighters had envisioned a strong nation and a value-based younger generation, and society had a responsibility to fulfil that vision.
Karbi Anglong is the seventh district visited by the governor under the anti-drug initiative, a statement said.
Students, social organisations, ex-servicemen, civil society representatives and government officials were among those who participated in the march.
Governor Acharya paid tribute to freedom fighters from the region, including Semsonsing Ingti and Nongjirang Lekthe.
He said the nation’s strength lay in its youth and their energy should be channelled towards education, skill development, sports and innovation.
He said the high turnout in the march reflected people’s collective determination to confront the challenge of drug abuse.
The Governor said creating a drug-free society required more than government action, with families, educational institutions, social organisations and religious institutions needing to work together.
